XADM: Non-Delivery Reports to a Distribution List or to a Public Folder in Exchange 2000 Server Are Not Supported (817220)

SUMMARY

You cannot configure Exchange 2000 to send non-delivery reports (NDRs) to a distribution list or to a public folder. This configuration is not supported.

This article contains information about how you can configure Exchange 2000 to send a copy of an NDR to a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail address. This article also discusses a workaround that you can try if you want to send NDRs to multiple users.

By default, when an e-mail message cannot be delivered in Exchange 2000, an NDR is returned to the sender of the message. Exchange 2000 converts all NDRs to MAPI reports, and MAPI reports can only have one recipient. However, if you want to store NDRs in an additional location, you can configure Exchange 2000 to send a copy of all NDRs to an SMTP e-mail address.

Note You cannot send an NDR to the SMTP address of a distribution list or to a public folder that is local to the Exchange 2000 organization.

Send NDRs to Multiple Users

To send an NDR to multiple users or to members of a distribution list, you can configure Exchange 2000 to send a copy of the NDR to the SMTP address of a distribution list on a host on a foreign system. After you configure Exchange 2000 to do this, configure the foreign system to send the NDR messages back to Exchange 2000. By doing so, multiple users receive individual copies of the NDR.

Note When you use this workaround, an individual copy of the NDR is created on the server for each recipient. As a result, this workaround uses increased system resources because of the increase in the number of messages that are generated.
