The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMSWhen you try to open a file from a File Transfer Protocol
(FTP) site in an Office 2003 program, you may receive error messages that are
similar to the following: Cannot connect to the FTP
server on the computer named 'ftp.microsoft.com'. -and-
The folder 'ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/' isn't accessible.
The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a
password, or the filename contains a / or \. CAUSEThis problem may occur if your computer is connected to the
Internet by a proxy server, and the FTP proxy settings in Microsoft Internet
Explorer are not correct. RESOLUTIONTo prevent this problem from occurring, correct the FTP
proxy settings. To do this, follow these steps: Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your
product documentation to complete these steps.
- Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click Internet Options.
- In the Internet Properties dialog box,
click the Connections tab, and then click LAN
Settings.
- In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings
dialog box, click Advanced under Proxy
server.
- In the Proxy Settings dialog box, click to
clear the Use the same proxy server for all protocols check
box under Servers.
- In the FTP box, type the Uniform Resource
Locator (URL) for your FTP gateway server. The following is an example of the
syntax to use:
- Press TAB to move the insertion point to the
Port box that is to the right of the FTP box.
Press DELETE to clear the box, and then click OK three times
to accept the changes and close the Internet Properties dialog
box.
If you still cannot connect to an FTP site, ask your network
administrator if you are referring to the correct FTP gateway server.
To verify the FTP server name:
- On the File menu, click
Open.
- In the Look in box, click
Add/Modify FTP Locations.
- In the Add/Modify FTP Locations dialog
box, click the name of the FTP server that you want to access, and then click
Remove.
- After you remove the location, type the FTP server name in
the Name of FTP site box, and then click
OK.
Note You may have to quit and restart the program before you connect
to an external FTP site.
