Cannot Edit Ows.css or Add a Reference to the Ows.css Stylesheet to Your SharePoint Team Services Web Site (817133)

SYMPTOMS

After you click Style Sheet Links on the Format menu on the default home page of a SharePoint Team Services 2.0 Web site, one of the following symptoms may occur:
  • When you click the Ows.css fiel and then click Edit, you receive the following message:
    _layouts/1033/styles/ows.css
    Files in the _layouts folder are not available for editing.
    -or-
  • When you click Ows.css and then click Remove, the style sheet is removed from your Web site. If you click Add, you may not be able to link a new style sheet to your Web site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Ows.css lives in a protected folder on the server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, locate the Ows.css file by using Microsoft Internet Explorer (located here: http://server/_layouts/1033/styles/ows.css). When you are prompted, save the Ows.css file, and then import this file into your Web Site in FrontPage. After you have a local copy of the Ows.css file in your Web site, you can edit the local copy.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
