File Replication Does Not Work As You Expect When You Configure Disk Quotas (816945)

SYMPTOMS

When you enable disk quotas in a domain where a domain-based Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) topology with automatic replication is configured, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:
  • Files are not replicated.
  • Inconsistent replicas are generated.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if there are disk quotas applied in the domain. Disk quota constraints can limit file-replication.

When you configure automatic replication for the domain DFS replica, the File Replication Service starts and replication begins. When users change their files, the changes are replicated to the DFS replica partners. However, in some cases the replication operation may be unsuccessful because of a disk-quota limitation. Therefore, the data may lose its consistency.

Note If you enable disk quotas in an environment where you use the File Replication Service (FRS), this is operation not supported.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue may also occur when you configure third-party disk quota tools in a domain where a domain-based DFS topology is configured.
