SYMPTOMS

When you enable Network Load Balancing on the network adapter, you can no longer ping any of the IP addresses bound to that network adapter from another system.

CAUSE

Network Load Balancing in Windows 2003 requires the following support in network cards: the network adapter must support multi-packet receive indications. There is a limited number of server-class network adapters that fall in this category.

RESOLUTION

Use a server-class network adapter that supports multi-packet receive indications. To determine whether your network adapter supports multi-packet receive indications, download and run the Chknic.exe tool. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site: www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/reskit/resourcekit.mspx Chknic.exe is included in the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit.
