SYMPTOMSWhen you try to configure a Microsoft Windows 2000 Routing and Remote Access server from the Windows Server 2003 Routing and Remote Access utility, you may receive the following error message: A phonebook entry cannot be added:
The Authentication service is unknown. CAUSEThis issue occurs if you try to configure a demand-dial network interface on the Windows 2000 Routing and Remote Access server. WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, configure a Remote Desktop Connection to the Windows 2000 server and use the Routing and Remote Access utility on that server to configure the demand-dial network connection.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATIONWhen you try to administer the Windows 2000 server by using the Windows Server 2003 Routing and Remote Access utility, remote access service remote procedure calls (RPCs) are used. Because of new security features introduced in Windows Server 2003, these remote access RPC calls are not compatible with Windows 2000 RPCs.
The new Windows Server 2003 remote access service client RPC call contains additional authentication information that is not recognized by Windows 2000 Server. Therefore, the RPC call causes an exception that is translated into an error status, generating the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
