Windows XP Setup Creates a Network Bridge Between Two or More Network Devices (816486)

SYMPTOMS

By default, if two or more networking devices are installed on your system during Network Setup, the Network Setup Wizard will try to set up a bridge connection between two network devices or between a device and a modem. The list of assumed networking devices includes:
  • Standard networking devices, such as Ethernet cards
  • Wireless networking devices
  • 1394 devices

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
