- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMSWhen you create a new folder in the root of a mapped network drive, you may not be able to specify a name for this new folder in Windows Explorer. Windows creates this folder and then automatically assigns it the default name ("New Folder"). Additionally, the newly created folder is not automatically selected (highlighted) in Windows Explorer.WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, create a folder in the root of the mapped drive, and then assign "write" permissions to this folder. STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATIONThis is a client issue that does not occur when you use the Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) method to access a network share (\\server\sharename) instead of using a mapped network drive.
