MSBBN: How to Share Your Computer's Internet Connection Through Your Base Station (814446)

This article describes how to distribute your computer's shared Internet connection by using your Microsoft Base Station. For example, if your modem does not have an Ethernet connection, you can connect the modem to your computer, and then share that connection from your computer through your base station to your network. Part 1: Set Your Base Station to Bridging Mode

Note When the base station uses bridging mode, you cannot access the Base Station Management Tool. If you want to change from bridging mode back to routing mode, you must restore the base station to its factory default settings. You may want to back up your current base station settings before you change to bridging mode so you can easily restore your Internet connection settings and any custom settings later.
  1. Start the Broadband Network Utility (BNU) , and then click Base Station Management Tool on the Tools menu.
  2. Type your password to log on to the Base Station Management Tool
  3. In the Base Station Management Tool, click Security.
  4. On the Security menu, click Network Mode.
  5. To change to bridging mode, click Bridging mode.
  6. Click Apply to save your changes.

Part 2: Connect the Base Station to the Computer

  1. Plug one end of a standard Ethernet cable into port 1 of your base station.
  2. Plug the other end into the Ethernet port of the computer that has the Internet connection that you want to share.

Part 3: Disable ICF and Network Bridges

To disable the Internet Connection Firewall:
  1. On the computer that you want to share the connection from, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
  2. Click the local area connection that is connected to your base station, and then click Change settings of this connection under Network Tasks.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box under Internet Connection Firewall.
To disable network bridges:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
  2. Under Network Bridge, if there is a network bridge, right-click Network Bridge, and then click Disable.

Part 4: Run the Network Setup Wizard

To start the Network Setup Wizard:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
  2. Under Pick a Task, click Setup or change your home or small office network (Network Setup Wizard).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to enable Internet Connection Sharing.

Part 5: Configure Client Computers

On each computer that you want to connect to the Internet by using the shared connection:
  1. Plug one end of a standard Ethernet cable into an available port on your base station.
  2. Plug the other end into the Ethernet port of the client computer.
  3. Perform the steps from Part 3 of this article on the client computer.
  4. Perform the steps from Part 4 of this article on the client computer.
