The second instance of a process runs very slowly in Windows 2000 (814192)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
SYMPTOMSWhen you run multiple instances of a process on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based server, you experience all the following symptoms: - During the second instance, the running process performs poorly. Operations may take up to 40 times longer to complete in the second instance than the operations do in the first instance. In this scenario, the process is designed to take advantage of a lot of the RAM that is available in your computer. To use RAM, the process shares memory through a file-mapping object. The process can take advantage of more than 2 gigabytes of memory.
- The second instance creates heavy paging even when
sufficient memory is available to support the instance.
- If you add additional RAM to the computer, the problem is not resolved.
CAUSEThis problem occurs because of a problem in the Windows 2000 memory
manager component. In Windows 2000, the working set does not grow when the hash table is full. This may cause a lot of paging operations. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2003. This problem does not occur in Windows Server 2003.STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
