FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series Does Not Play G.711 Content (814127)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows Millennium Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Media Format 9 Series SDK

SYMPTOMS

Windows Media Player 9 Series does not play back content that uses the G.711 audio format. The core components that the Windows Media Format SDK provides and that are used in the Windows Media Player cannot handle G.711 decoding.

CAUSE

This occurs because the underlying format assumes that all audio decoders can decode to both 8-bit and 16-bit PCM audio. The G.711 codec that is included with the operating system can only decode to 16-bit PCM audio and causes an error when it tries to decode back to 8-bit audio. At this point, an error is generated on the client.
