SYMPTOMS
You cannot modify or delete files that are
located on an IBM OS/2 Warp 4-based file server that uses high-performance file
system (HPFS).
You may also experience one or more of the following
symptoms when you try to delete a file in Windows Explorer:
- You receive the following error message:
Cannot delete
FileName.
It is being used by another
person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try
again.
- The file appears to be deleted and is no longer listed in
Windows Explorer after you delete it. However, when you press F5 to redraw the
display, the file reappears in Windows Explorer.
- Windows Explorer stops responding (hangs) for approximately
35 seconds. You may also receive the following error message:
Cannot delete FileName. The specified
network name is no longer available.
Note This problem may occur after you install either of the following on your Windows
XP-based computer:
- Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)
- The hotfix that is documented in the following Knowledge

Additional Installation Information- Because of file dependencies, this update requires Windows
XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).
- You must restart the computer after you install this
update.
- This update supports the following Setup switches:
- -?: Displays the list of installation switches
- -u: Unattended mode
- -f: Forces other programs to quit when the computer shuts
down
- -n: Do not back up files for removal
- -o: Overwrites OEM files without prompting
- -z: Do not restart when installation is complete
- -q: Quiet mode (no user interaction)
- -l: Lists the hotfixes that are installed
- -x: Extracts the files without running Setup
For example, the following command line installs the update
without any user intervention and does not force the computer to restart: Q813586_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe -u -q -z
After you install this hotfix, a new registry key is created. This registry key has the following properties:

Value Name: NoDeleteOnClose
The default value for
NoDeleteOnClose is
0, and this value takes effect only when the
OplocksDisabled DWORD value is set to
1 in the same registry key. The behavior of this update depends on
the value of the
NoDeleteOnClose DWORD value, and the value of the
OplocksDisabled DWORD value, as follows:
- OplocksDisabled value is set to 0 (recommended). This hotfix resolves the problems deleting files
that are described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, but you may continue to
experience the intermittent redraw problems in Windows Explorer that are described in
the "Symptoms" section of this article.
- NoDeleteOnClose is set to 1, and OplocksDisabled is set to 1. This hotfix resolves the redraw problem that is described in the
"Symptoms" section of this article, but you may experience intermittent
problems deleting files in Windows Explorer only (even when the file is not
already open) that are described in the "Symptoms" section of this
article.
