XADM: Recipient Policy for an Exchange Server 5.5 Site Incorrectly Displays All Address Types as Selected (813147)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Exchange 2000 Server System Manager utility to view the E-Mail Addresses (Policy) tab of a recipient policy properties dialog box, all the e-mail address types are selected, even though some of these proxy addresses are disabled in the Exchange Server 5.5 site.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you use Active Directory Connector (ADC) to replicate a pure Exchange Server site to Active Directory by using the Configuration Connection Agreement. The e-mail address proxy types are not updated because the disabledGatewayProxy attribute does not replicate between sites in Exchange Server 5.5.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue for a pure Exchange Server site, manually synchronize the Exchange Server site addressing object and the corresponding recipient policy in Active Directory. To do so:
  1. After ADC creates a recipient policy, open the policy by using the Exchange Administrator utility, and then click to clear the check boxes of the proxies that are disabled in the original Exchange Server site.
  2. If you disable one of the proxy types in the pure Exchange Server site, you must do the same to the recipient policy in the Exchange 2000 System Manager utility.
ADC does not overwrite these manual modifications that you make to the policy in Exchange 2000 System Manager.

MORE INFORMATION

When ADC replicates pure Exchange Server sites to Active Directory, it creates recipient policies for these sites in the Recipients container. Because the disabledGatewayProxy attribute is not replicated, none of the proxy addresses are disabled, even if they are disabled in the original Exchange Server site. Because of this, when you create a recipient in one of the pure Exchange Server sites, you may end up with different e-mail address proxies depending on whether you create the recipient by using the Exchange Server Exchange Administrator program or by using the Exchange 2000 System Manager utility.
