Windows System Restore Utility Quits and All Restore Points Are Deleted (812119)

SYMPTOMSWhen you run the Windows System Restore utility, the utility
may stop running, and all restore points are deleted. When this occurs, the
following error is recorded in the system event log: 0xc0000040 In this scenario, the System
Restore utility restarts the next time that Windows is started, and new restore
points are created. CAUSEThis issue may occur under a rare set of circumstances --
specifically, when a program or programs try to simultaneously access and
modify the same file in a way that creates a conflict with the functions of the
System Restore utility.
This issue has been reported in connection
with RealOne Player by Real Networks.STATUS Microsoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
