Backup Does Not Work and Generates Event ID 8012 "Backup Is Already Active" (811934)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are running scheduled backups of services that store data in Enhanced Storage Engine (ESE) databases, such as Exchange 2000 Server storage groups, the Site Replication service, or Windows 2000 Active Directory, the following event might be recorded in the application event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTBackup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8012
Description: The 'Microsoft Site Replication Service' returned 'Backup is already active. ' from a call to 'HrESEBackupSetup()' additional data '-'

CAUSE

A previous instance of Windows 2000 Backup (Ntbackup.exe) is still running in the background. The previous instance of Ntbackup.exe has a connection open to the specified service, so a second instance cannot connect.

RESOLUTION

Use Task Manager to identify and stop any other instances of Ntbackup.exe that are not responding.
