XADM: Setup Does Not Work When You Try to Upgrade an Exchange 2000 Front-End Server (811669)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
SYMPTOMS When you run Setup to install an Exchange 2000 Server
service pack or upgrade an Exchange 2000 Server computer that is configured as
a front-end server, Setup may not work. This symptom occurs after you disable
one or more of the following services:
- Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP)
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
- World Wide Web Publishing
- Internet Information Services (IIS)
Administration
CAUSEThis issue occurs because the following services must be
installed and enabled when you run Setup to install a service pack, upgrade,
remove, or reinstall Exchange 2000 Server on the front-end server:
- Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP)
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
- World Wide Web Publishing
- Internet Information Services (IIS)
Administration
Note that you must install and enable these services, but you
do not have to start the services before you can install a service pack,
upgrade, remove, or reinstall Exchange 2000 Server on a front-end
server. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, enable the service, run Setup to
perform the operation, and then disable the service. To enable or disable a
service:
- Click Start, point to
Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and
then click Services.
- In the list of services, right-click the service that you
want to enable or disable, and then click
Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- Do one of the following, and then click
OK:
- To configure the service to start automatically when
the computer starts, click Automatic in the Startup
type box .
- To disable the service, click Disabled
in the Startup type box.
- Quit the Services snap-in.
