XCON: You Receive Non-Delivery Reports After You Rename an X.400 Connector (811647)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

If you rename an X.400 Connector that you use to transfer e-mail messages, you may receive non-delivery reports (NDR) that contain the following error message:
A required directory operation was unsuccessful.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you rename an X.400 Connector while the message transfer agent (MTA) service is running. In this case, the NDR is issued because the routing destination that was chosen previously is deleted (as part of the renaming operation) when Exchange 2000 tries to queue it for relaying purposes.

Note Routing and queuing are separate occurrences in the MTA.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, stop and then restart the MTA service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Although this issue rarely occurs, stop the MTA service before you rename an X.400 Connector.
