When You Add WordArt Objects Publisher 2002 Slows Down and Appears Unresponsive (811060)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you add WordArt objects to a document in Publisher 2002, Publisher 2002 may slow down and appear unresponsive.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Publisher 2002 WordArt is redesigned to bring WordArt up to date with the rest of the Office suite and differs from earlier versions of WordArt. Publisher 2002 WordArt is created by using the Vector Markup Language (VML). The Vector Graphics Rendering (VGX) engine uses the Graphics Device Interface (GDI). This has increased CPU usage because every resize or modification of the WordArt object causes Publisher to recalculate the dimensions of the WordArt object. Computers that are close to the minimum requirements of Publisher 2002, slow down significantly when you work with documents that contain a lot of WordArt objects. You may notice this slowness more on computers that have a CPU of 500mhz or less.

WORKAROUND

Microsoft Publisher 2000 Is Still Installed

If Publisher 2000 is available to you, you can use WordArt 3.2 which is part of Microsoft Publisher 2000, to work around this issue. If Publisher 2000 is presently installed and available to you, follow these steps:
  1. In Publisher 2002, click Insert, click Object, and then click WordArt 3.2.

Publisher 2000 Is Not Installed and Installation Media Is Available

If WordArt 3.2 is not present, or it was removed during the upgrade process, but the Microsoft Office 2000 installation media is available, you can install WordArt 3.2 to a separate folder and then access Word Art 3.2 by using Publisher 2002. To install WordArt 3.2, run the Publisher 2000 installation program from the Office 2000 Professional Disc 2 CD-ROM. To install WordArt 3.2 to a separate folder, follow these steps:
