SMS: Patch Installation from the SMS Software Update Services Feature Pack May Install the Patch and Prompt for a Restart Continually (810797)

SYMPTOMS

When you deploy a security patch or a Microsoft Office patch by using the Distribute Software Updates Wizard from the Systems Management Server (SMS) Software Update Services Feature Pack, the patch may be installed repeatedly, and you may be prompted to restart the computer every time the patch is installed. This issue may occur if you postpone restarting the computer when you first install the patch. When this issue occurs, your client computer may perform sluggishly every time the patch is run. This is more noticeable for larger patches.

CAUSE

If a patch requires a restart, Patchinstall.exe does not detect that the patch is installed until the computer has been restarted. The patch installation runs multiple times until you restart the computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, restart the computer after the patch is installed.
