VSO2002: Large Unexpected Increase in File Size After You Insert a Picture into Your Drawing (810627)

SYMPTOMS

When you save your Visio drawing after you insert a picture from a graphic image file into the drawing, there may be a large, unexpected increase in the size of your drawing file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Visio converts the inserted picture to a 32-bit bitmap. As a result, when you save your drawing that contains the inserted picture, the size of your drawing file is increased by the size of the bitmap image. In some cases, the increase in file size can be up to 10 times the size of the original picture. Visio converts graphic images such as .tif, .jpg, or .gif files, to bitmap format when they are inserted into a drawing.

This behavior is by design.

To insert a picture from a graphic image file into a Visio drawing:
  1. Start Visio, and then open your drawing.
  2. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
  3. Locate the folder that contains the picture that you want to insert, click the picture, and then click Open.
