SUMMARY

This article lists the problems you may encounter if you use spaces rather than tabs to align columns.

  1. If you are using a font with variable width characters, you will not be able to align the columns exactly because the characters are all different widths. You must use tabs in this case to get the columns to align.
  2. With fixed-width fonts, if you format any of the characters as bold or italic (including spaces), the document view screen will not accurately display what will be printed, making it very difficult to align the columns correctly. The text will appear to take up more room that it actually does when printed.
  3. If Wrap For Window was turned on when tabbed columns were created, the columns may not align correctly when printing. They will also look the same in Print Preview as when they print.
To reliably align text in columns, set tab stops in your document and press TAB to move between the columns.

-or-

Turn off Wrap For Window to align the columns in Normal View so that they display the same way they print. After re-alignment of the columns, they should print correctly.

NOTE: Wrap For Window causes text to wrap at the edge of the window instead of at the right-margin indent.
