SYMPTOMS

In Works, you may receive the following error message.

Works 4.0, 4.5, and 4.5a for Windows 95

The object is linked to a document that cannot be found.

The error message occurs in the following circumstances:

  1. You have requested an update of linked information to a document that no longer exists. It has been renamed, deleted, or moved from the logical place on the hard disk where it was when the link was created.

    In the case where the file has been renamed or relocated, select the object in the document, click Links from the Edit menu, click Change Link, and specify the correct file for the link.
  2. The linked document or the link information itself is corrupted.

    In the case of a corrupted link, delete the object in the document and re-link from the server application. In the case of a corruption, the linked document must be recreated.
  3. In Works 3.0, the client document (the document that contains the link) is linked to a piece of information in another Works for Windows module that no longer exists.

    For instance, if the link is to cells A1 through A10 in a Works for Windows spreadsheet, and cells A5 through A10 are deleted in that spreadsheet, this error message will appear. This is not the case in a link to a non-Works for Windows file. If the link is to a similar group of cells in Excel 3.0 for Windows, the error message will not appear and the deleted information in the previous example will simply not appear in the client document.
