Installing Works for Windows on Removable Media (77200)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2.0

This article was previously published under Q77200

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Works, you may receive the following error message:
The location you have chosen to Install Works in is invalid or not allowed. Please check the drive and/or the directory name.

RESOLUTION

This problem may occur if Windows perceives the specified drive as being removable media. Windows must be able to create, read, and write to temporary files to swap its applications. Because it is a removable media device, Works for Windows will not install unless the drive is configured as non-removable.

If the drive is a removable cartridge drive (for example, a Bernoulli box by Iomega), the cartridge usually can be physically locked in place. For more information, see your drive documentation or contact your drive vendor.
