The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft .NET Passport 2.x
  • Microsoft Passport 2.5

This article was previously published under Q331886

SYMPTOMS

If you enter 256 characters for the value of a host name, you receive the following bogus error:
The value entered for the host name must be a string less than 2048 characters long and cannot be empty.

RESOLUTION

This bug was corrected in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

After you enter 255 characters for the value of a host name, any error message that indicates the string must be less than 2048 characters is bogus. You receive a similar error after you enter 2080 characters in the Return URL field, the Cobrand field, and every field below them. This is a cosmetic issue, and it does not prevent correct configurations in Microsoft .NET Passport from functioning.

To Reproduce the Behavior

Enter 256 characters for the value of a host name. You receive the following bogus error:
The value entered for the host name must be a string less than 2048 characters long and cannot be empty
