SYMPTOMS

You may experience the following symptoms:
  • When you click Print or Print Preview on the File menu or click Find on the Edit menu in Internet Explorer, the Print and Edit dialog boxes do not appear.
  • You cannot open a link to a Web page in a new window.
  • You cannot search for files when you click Start, and then select Search.
  • You receive the following error message when you click double-clickComponent services in Administrative Tools in Control Panel:
    The server catalog version is not supported. The catalog is either newer or older than this application and a common version for communication does not exist.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if a corrupted value exists in the registry that may have been written by a third-party installation program. The value may have existed before the symptoms occurred, but the problem may not have occurred until you used a particular component service.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.To resolve this problem, remove the corrupted value. Do not remove the registry key. To remove the corrupted value, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32

    Note The registry key contains an unreadable string of alpha and extended characters.
  3. In the right pane, right-click InprocServer32, and then click Delete.

    Note that the value contained in this registry entry is not always the same.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
