XADM: Exchange Generates Multiple Copies of an NDR That Is Sent to a Distribution List (329046)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

This article was previously published under Q329046

SYMPTOMS

When you send a non-delivery report (NDR) from a mail server that does not run Exchange 2000 to a distribution group on an Exchange 2000 computer, the message is converted into as many individual messages as there are recipients in the distribution group. When there are many recipients or when the message contains a large attachment, there may be performance degradation when Exchange 2000 processes the message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Exchange 2000 converts a non-delivery report into MAPI reports. Because MAPI reports can only have one recipient, Exchange 2000 multiplies the non-delivery report enough times to ensure that there is only one recipient per message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
