SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Project 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) on a computer with Microsoft Office XP already installed, you may notice that some Office XP programs and components no longer work as expected.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when Microsoft Project Setup overwrites certain Office XP files with older versions of those files, and it may delete certain registry keys.

The files that may be overwritten include the following:
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Mssp3en.lex

This changes the file parameters from 355 kilobytes (KB) and a date of 2/28/01 to 322 KB and a date of 11/22/99.
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Mssp3ena.lex

This changes the file parameters from 349 KB and a date of 2/28/01 to 524 KB and a date of 11/22/99.
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\Fp4awec.dll

This changes the file parameters from 441 KB, a date of 3/6/00, and a version of v4.0.2.3717 to 441 KB, a date of 4/25/00, and a version of v4.0.2.4022.
The following registry keys may be removed:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{2DF8D04C-5BFA-101B-BDE5-00AA0044DE52}\2.2
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{2DF8D04C-5BFA-101B-BDE5-00AA0044DE52}\2.2\0\win32
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{2DF8D04C-5BFA-101B-BDE5-00AA0044DE52}\2.2\FLAGS
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.pip
Note that this last registry key is still used by Office XP. When these registry keys are deleted and these files are overwritten, the Office XP components and programs that remain on the system may not function properly. Some program tasks and features may appear to run, yet no action is actually performed. These malfunctions may not generate specific error messages.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Reinstall Office XP to repair the installation after you install Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1.
  • Copy the Office XP files to the Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1 Admin install point. Note that if there are any updates applied to the Office XP Admin install point, you may also have to apply these updates to the Microsoft Project Admin install point.
