PIP2001: "Illegal operation: PIP caused invalid page fault in module Itss.dll" error message (328846)

This article was previously published under Q328846 SYMPTOMS When you try to start Microsoft Picture It!, you may
receive an error message that is similar to the following: illegal operation: PIP caused invalid page fault in module
ITSS.DLL CAUSE This issue may occur if one or more of the following
conditions exist:
- Your installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer is
damaged.
- Your installation of Picture It! is damaged.
RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and the click Add or Remove
Programs.
- In the list of installed programs, click Internet Explorer, and then click Change.
- In the Internet Explorer Setup dialog box, click Repair, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to
complete the repair process. If this command is missing, go to the next step.
Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, do not
complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next
step.
- Download and install the latest version of Internet
Explorer. For information about how to download and install the latest version
of Internet Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is
resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go
to the next step.
- Re-create the User.sbt file. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Search, and then click All Files and Folders.
- In the All or part of the file name
box, type user.sbt, click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box, and then click Search.
- In the Search Results pane, right-click the User.sbt file, and then
click Rename.
- Name the file User.old. A new
User.sbt file is created when you save pictures in the gallery.
- Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is
resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go
to the next step.
- Download the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
- Double-click the Pipwin2k.exe file or the
Pip2k1kl.exe file, and then follow the instructions that
appear on the screen to remove the Picture It! program files from your
computer.
- Double-click the Msicuu.exe file, and then follow the instructions that
appear on the screen to install the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility.
- Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean Up.
- Click Picture It! on the list of installed products, and then click Remove.
- Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to
complete the removal process.
- Reinstall Picture It!
