SYMPTOMS

When you open a new Microsoft Internet Explorer window, and when one or more Internet Explorer windows are already open, the address of the Web site appears unexpectedly in the title bar of the window. For example, when you visit http://www.microsoft.com, you may see "www.microsoft.com" instead of "Microsoft Corporation" in the upper-left corner of the Internet Explorer window.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you turn on the Use automatic configuration script feature in the Internet Options dialog box in Internet Explorer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn off the Use automatic configuration script feature. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Open a new instance of Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Connections tab.
  4. Double-click the connection that you want to edit.
  5. In the Automatic configuration pane, click to clear the Use automatic configuration script check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click OK to close each Internet Options dialog box.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 service pack that contains this fix.
