PowerPoint Files in the Resource Gallery May Not Open on Office XP Clients (328555)

SYMPTOMS

When you put a Microsoft PowerPoint file in the resource gallery in Content Management Server (CMS) and try to link to the file, you may receive the following error message:
Page cannot be displayed
The following event ID message may logged in the event log:
Event ID: 1600
A request was made for a resource that does not exist in the database.
The problem only occurs with Microsoft Office XP on the client that is trying to access the resource.

CAUSE

CMS uses cookies to track authenticated users. When you access a resource in the resource gallery, a valid cookie must be present in the HTTP request. A bug in the originally released version of Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 causes PowerPoint not to present this required cookie when it tries to access the resource.

RESOLUTION

This issue was resolved in Office XP Service Pack 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

CMS sets an AUTH%5TOKEN on clients that have authenticated successfully. When CMS generates links to the resource gallery, the URL is hashed together with this cookie. The cookie must be present in the request for the URL to be accessed successfully.
