HOW TO: Maintain Account Permissions and Access to E-Mail While You Migrate Mailboxes from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 (328291)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q328291 SUMMARY
In large companies, the process of upgrading mailboxes from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server can take a long time. You may want to verify that users with Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes and users with Exchange 2000 Server mailboxes can exchange e-mail during the migration period. You may also want to transfer account permissions to avoid having to manually reassign permissions after the migration. This article describes how to do these things.

Maintain E-Mail While You Migrate Mailboxes to Exchange 2000 Server
To do this, use the following migration tools in the order presented:
- Active Directory Connector (ADC): If you expect the process of creating accounts with the Active Directory Migration Tool to take a long time, you can first set up ADC to create contacts in Active Directory with e-mail addresses. This permits Active Directory users and Exchange Server 5.5 users to exchange e-mail during the migration period.
- Active Directory Migration Tool: Use the Active Directory Migration Tool to retain the account permissions (for example, permissions to network printers, file shares, and other mailboxes). The Active Directory Migration Tool creates new user accounts in Active Directory but does not match the new accounts to the existing contacts.
- Active Directory Account Cleanup Wizard (ADClean): ADClean creates mail-enabled user accounts. ADClean merges the new user accounts (from the Active Directory Migration Tool) with the existing contacts (from ADC).
- Migration Wizard (in Exchange 2000 Server with Service Pack 1): The Migration Wizard finds the mail-enabled users, creates Exchange 2000 Server mailboxes, and then transfers Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox data to the new mailboxes.NOTE: To download the Active Directory Migration Tool, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Important: To retain permissions, the destination Exchange 2000 domain (the domain in which you install the Active Directory Migration Tool and into which security principals or resources are being moved) must be in native mode.
