SYMPTOMS
When you run a System State backup on a domain controller,
an incorrect DNS query is issued. The query uses the computer name of the
domain controller as the domain name. For example, if the domain controller is
named Northwind and the site is DC-SITE, the name is
"_ldap._tcp.dc-site._sites.dc._msdcs.northwind."
If you turn on
Netlogon logging, you see the following entries:
08/16 13:13:10 [MISC] DsGetDcName function called: Dom:NORTHWIND Acct:(null) Flags: DS DNS RET_DNS
08/16 13:13:10 [MAILSLOT] Received ping from NORTHWIND NORTHWIND (null) on <Local>
08/16 13:13:10 [CRITICAL] Ping from NORTHWIND for domain NORTHWIND (null) for (null) on <Local> is invalid since we don't host the named domain.
08/16 13:13:27 [CRITICAL] DsGetDcNext: _ldap._tcp.191-64-Switch--Def-First-Site._sites.dc._msdcs.NORTHWIND.: Cannot Query DNS. 1460 0x5b4
08/16 13:13:27 [CRITICAL] NetpDcGetNameIp: NORTHWIND: No data returned from DnsQuery.
08/16 13:13:27 [CRITICAL] NetpDcGetName: NORTHWIND: IP and Netbios are both done.
08/16 13:13:27 [MISC] DsGetDcName function returns 1355: Dom:NORTHWIND Acct:(null) Flags: DS DNS RET_DNS
