The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q328252

SYMPTOMS

When you process a file using operations such as open, seek, and read, the pocess runs much faster when you specify a target directory and local disk by drive letter (for example, C:\TEMP), instead of by the local UNC name: \\MACHINENAME\TEMP.

CAUSE

There is a delay when you use the UNC name instead of the local disk because you have to go through the redirector, back through the server, and then to the disk.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

At this time, this problem seems to occur only on Windows 2000 operating systems.
