"Process 'Sfuexpfx.exe' Returns Failure" Error Message When You Install Q327314 (328179)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Q327314 hotfix after you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), you may receive the following error message:
Process 'sfuexpfx.exe' returns failure. Rollback starts now.

CAUSE

Q327314 is a patch to the Q320175 fix. Therefore, it determines whether Q320175 is installed. However, SP3 removes references to hotfixes, and therefore the Q327314 installer cannot determine whether Q320175 is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Manually extract the files from Q327314 by using a ZIP extraction utility.
  2. Replace the %WINDIR%\System32\NfsSvc.exe file with the extracted NfsSvc.exe file.
  3. Apply Q327314.
Step 3 will appear to fail, but the patch is still applied. You cannot remove the patch after it has been applied.
