"Setup has detected a prerelease or trial version of Microsoft Office XP" error message when you run the Setup program for Office XP (328171)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Office XP, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has detected a prerelease or trial version of Microsoft Office XP.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:
  • You installed the trial version of Office XP on a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer.
  • You upgraded your computer's operating system to Microsoft Windows 2000.
  • You removed the trial version of Office XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to completely remove the trial version, and then install the retail version of Office XP. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Microsoft Windows Installer registry settings that are associated with your Office XP installation.

  2. To use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
    2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    3. Click OK, and then click Exit.
  3. Run the Office XP Setup program to reinstall Office XP.
