SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Clip Organizer, you may receive the following error message:
Clip Organizer cannot complete the operation, unspecified error 0x80004005.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is corrupted.
This may also occur if you upgrade to MDAC 2.7 and the program PCAnywhere 10.5 is installed on your computer. The "remote management" feature of PCAnywhere writes a registry key value that changes the authentication level used by the OLE DB proxy.

RESOLUTION

If you have PCAnywhere installed on your computer follow the steps in Method 2. If the steps in Method 2 are not successful or if you do not have PCAnywhere installed, follow the steps in Method 1.

Method 1: Update MDAC

To resolve this problem, reinstall MDAC. This restores the installation defaults and resolves file version conflicts, missing files, and corrupted registry entries. To reinstall MDAC, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore to start Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the following file

    drive:\Windows\inf\Mdac.inf

where drive is the drive where Windows is installed.
  3. Right-click Mdac.inf, and then click Install.

NOTE: You may be prompted to insert the Microsoft Windows CD in the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  4. Restart Windows.
Note If your computer runs Microsoft Windows 2000, update the Mdacinst.inf file instead of the Mdac.inf file. After you update the Mdacinst.inf file, you may have to run the Microsoft Office XP System Files Update. Method 2: Use Dcomcnfg.exe to change the authentication level

Dcomcnfg.exe (also known as DCOM Config) is a utility that you can use to secure distributed COM (DCOM) objects that have been created.

To use Dcomcnfg.exe, follow these steps.Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
