This problem is corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.

Hotfix Information
After you install the hot fix, you will have to do an Open and Repair from the
File|Open menu. This hotfix allows you to successfully open the files by using Open and Repair without using safe mode (/safe) for Word.
Note If you use a document management system to manage your document
workflow, you will not be able to use this hotfix because Microsoft Word's Open
and Repair feature will not be accessible. Most document management systems do
not provide access to this feature.
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is
only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it
to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive
additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the
next Office XP Service Pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the
Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
