ODBC for DB2 Driver Fails with Not Valid Datatype Error (327894)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q327894

SYMPTOMS

When you try to submit special select statements against a DB2 Table by using the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) for DB2 driver that is delivered with Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000, you may get an error message that indicates not valid datatype values.

CAUSE

Under certain conditions, the ODBC Driver for DB2 driver does not process a NULL row marker byte. This causes the whole buffer to be off by one byte. Therefore, all later rows contain corrupted values.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 Service Pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
Date Time Version Size File name
   -------------------------------------------------------
   13-Aug-2002 15:13 5.0.0.900 880,912 Mseidb2d.dll

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, the most recent fix that contains the preceding files may also contain additional files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Host Integration Server 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

When a SELECT statement is issued, the host returns an SQL Communication Area Reply Data (SQLCARD). In this case, the returned SQLSTATE is "00000" in the second row of data. This indicates any special condition, such as an empty column, that is a result of an OUTER JOIN statement. Because the SQLSTATE is all zeros, the ODBC Driver for DB2 skips the SQLCARD and moves on to parse the next byte in the data buffer. This is a QRYDTA NULL row marker because this column is empty. The NULL row marker is skipped in error, therefore causing the whole data buffer to be off by one byte.
