SMS: How to Specify Drives for Client Access Points and Distribution Points (327455)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

This article was previously published under Q327455

SUMMARY

When you deploy site systems like client access points (CAPs) and distribution points in a Systems Management Server (SMS) site, you may have to put the CAP or the distribution point on a drive other than the NTFS file system drive that has the most free space. This article describes how to specify the location of a CAP or a distribution point on a remote site system.

MORE INFORMATION

To put a CAP or a distribution point on a specific drive:
  1. Create a shared folder on the drive on which you want to put the CAP or the distribution point.
  2. Open the SMS Administrators console, and then go the following location:

    Systems Management Server\Site Database (site code - site name)\Site Hierarchy\Site code - site name\Site Settings\Site Systems

  3. Right-click Site Systems, point to New, and then click Windows NT Share.

NOTE: After you perform this step, SMS selects the most suitable drive for the CAP.
  4. Click Set.
  5. Using one of the following formats, type the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the server and share name, and then click OK:
    • \\server_name\share_name

      -or-

    • \\smsserver01\new_cap

  6. Open the properties of the newly created Microsoft Windows NT Share site system, click the Client Access Point tab, and then click to select the Use this site system as a client access point check box.

To create a distribution point on a specific volume, click the Distribution Point tab, and then click to select the Use this site system as a distribution point check box.

Like any other distribution point in the site, you can add this distribution point to a specific distribution point group if this group is configured in the site.
NOTE: A SMS folder structure is still created on the NTFS volume that has the most free space. This structure consumes about 4 to 5 megabytes (MB) of space. This structure is put there by the system and it cannot be relocated. These files are for SMS_Executive service support on the CAP.
