"Stop 0x0000001E" errors occur intermittently in Windows NT 4.0 (327447)

SYMPTOMS

You may receive "Stop 0x0000001E" errors intermittently.

CAUSE

A null pointer may be received for pwndStart if all the child windows of the desktop are topmost windows. The null pointer causes an access violation.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
