XADM: Error Message When You Try to Reinstall Exchange 2000 Server (327022)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to reinstall Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Install" because: - Active Directory has not replicated all the necessary permissions for the deleted items container. Please wait until replication completes before running setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rerun setup with the ForestPrep and DomainPrep commands, and then reinstall Exchange 2000 Server. To do this, follow these steps.

Step 1: Run ForestPrep

  1. Log on to the Exchange 2000 Server computer as a user who has full administrator credentials.
  2. Insert the Exchange 2000 Server CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. On the Start menu, click Run.
  4. Type drive:\setup\i386\setup /ForestPrep, where drive is your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
    IMPORTANT: Type the command exactly as it is written. If you make any errors, ForestPrep will not run.

Step 2: Run DomainPrep

  1. Log on to the Exchange 2000 Server computer as a user who has full administrator credentials.
  2. Insert the Exchange 2000 Server CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. On the Start menu, click Run.
  4. Type drive:\setup\i386\setup /DomainPrep, where drive is your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
    IMPORTANT: Type the command exactly as it is written. If you make any errors, DomainPrep will not run.

Step 3: Reinstall Exchange 2000 Server

  1. Log on to the Exchange 2000 Server computer as a user who has full administrator credentials.
  2. Insert the Exchange 2000 Server CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. On the Start menu, click Run.
  4. Type drive:\setup\i386\setup, where drive is your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  5. In the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard, click Reinstall next to Microsoft Exchange 2000.
  6. When the installation is complete, install the most current service pack for Exchange 2000 Server.
