XADM: Exchange System Manager Shuts Down when You Remove a Server by Using a Workstation (326126)

SYMPTOMS

If you use Exchange System Manager on a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer to remove an Exchange 2000 Server computer across the network by using the "Remove Server" task, this Exchange System Manager instance may shut down in the BuildConnectorDN function.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Exchange System Manager initializes differently in Windows 2000 Professional than in Windows 2000 Server. The Windows 2000 Professional installation of Exchange System Manager does not have some of the functionality that is required to perform the Remove Server operation.

NOTE: This issue does not affect Windows 2000 Server Administrator-only installations of Exchange System Manager.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the Exchange 2000 server by using Exchange System Manager on a server instead of on a Windows 2000 Professional-based workstation. Use one of the following methods:
  • From a Terminal Services connection to an Exchange 2000 server.
  • Directly in the console of an Exchange 2000 server.
  • From an Administrator-only ESM install on a Windows 2000 Server computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
