HOW TO: Install Services for UNIX (323966)

SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to install Services for UNIX (SFU). SFU is a suite of utilities you can use to share information and resources between UNIX and Windows computers. SFU incorporates an NFS server and client, user name mapping to match UNIX users to Windows users, UNIX shell utilities, and other capabilities.

Perform a Standard Installation

1. Insert the Windows Services for UNIX CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. In the Windows Services for UNIX Setup Wizard dialog box, click Next.
3. In the User name box, type your name, and then type the name of your organization in the Organization box.
4. In the CD Key boxes, type the product key from the back of the CD-ROM case, and then click Next.
5. Read the End User License Agreement (EULA), click I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Next.
6. Click Standard Installation, and then click Next.
7. In the Security Settings box, click the security options you want to use, and then click Next.
8. In the User Name Mapping box, type the name of your organization's user-name mapping server, and then click Next to complete the installation. If you do not know the name of the user-name mapping server, click Next without typing a name. You can specify the name of the server later by using Services for UNIX Administration.
9. Restart the computer to complete the installation.

Perform a Custom Installation

1. Insert the Windows Services for UNIX CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. In the Windows Services for UNIX Setup Wizard dialog box, click Next.
3. In the User name box, type your name, and then type the name of your organization in the Organization box.
4. In the CD Key boxes, type the product key from the back of the CD-ROM case, and then click Next.
5. Read the End User License Agreement (EULA), click I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Next.
6. Click Customized Installation, and then click Next.
7. Click the icon next to each component that you want to install, and then click Next.
8. If you are installing the GNU Software Development Kit (SDK), read the information about the GNU Library General Public license, and then click Next.
9. In the Security Settings box, read the instructions, click the options you want to use, and then click Next.
10. If you are installing ActiveState Perl, read the ActiveState Perl End User License Agreement. Click I accept the agreement, and then click Next. If you click I do not accept the agreement (Reselect components to be installed), and then click Next, you receive another opportunity to select the components to install.
11. In the User Name Mapping box, type the name of your organization's user-name mapping server, and then click Next to complete the installation. If you do not know the name of the user-name mapping server, click Next without typing a name. You can specify the name of the server later by using Windows Services for UNIX Administration. If you are also installing user-name mapping, type the name of the server on which you are installing Windows Services for UNIX.
12. In the Installation location box, type the path to the folder in which you want to install Windows Services for UNIX, and then click Next to complete the installation. The path you specify must contain only alphanumeric characters and the underscore (_) character.
13. Use Services in the Administrative Tools tool in Control Panel to change the startup type of each service you want to use to automatic. To turn on an Interix service (daemon), edit the /etc/inted.conf file.
