PRB: "Error Reading from File" Error Message When You Add File with Long File Name to a Visual SourceSafe Database (323693)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a file that does not comply with the 8.3 MS-DOS naming convention (that is, files that have long file names) to a Visual SourceSafe database, you may receive the following error message:
Error reading from file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Visual SourceSafe database is on a Novell network and when the file is added from a computer that uses Novell Client 4.83.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following three methods:
  1. Install the following fix for Novell Client 4.83 from the Novell support Web site:
  2. Use Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks.
  3. Downgrade to Novell Client 4.80 Service Pack 3 or earlier.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. On a computer that has Novell Client 4.83 installed, create a text file named MyLongFileName.txt, and then save the file to your desktop.
  2. Start Visual SourceSafe Explorer, and then log on to a database.
  3. Select a project, or create a new project.
  4. On the File menu, click Add Files.
  5. Click MyLongFileName.txt, click Add, and then click OK. Notice that you receive the error message that is listed in the "Symptoms" section.
