FIX: Distribution Agent May Fail with Syntax Error (323609)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)

This article was previously published under Q323609
BUG #: 358245 (SHILOH_BUGS)

SYMPTOMS

When the Distribution Agent applies a compensating command to a queued updating subscriber, it may shut down and you receive the following error message:
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ','. (Source: %s (Data source); Error number: 170)

All of these conditions must be true for the error message to occur:
  • You must be using queued updating subscribers.
  • You must have a unique constraint defined on one or more columns of a published article at both the publisher and the subscriber.
  • The columns defined to the unique constraint are not included in a primary key constraint.
  • You must have experienced an insert conflict between the publisher and a queued updating subscriber that involves columns that are included in a unique constraint.

CAUSE

The Distribution Agent generates an invalid compensating INSERT command.
