SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a document, a CArhiveException exception is generated. In debug builds, you also receive the following trace message:
CArchive exception: badClass.
CAUSE
Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) cannot dynamically create an object of a derived class during deserialization if you have a class in an MFC executable file with the following characteristics:
- The file is derived from another class.
- The file is implemented in a separate DLL (MFC extension .dll).
- The file uses the IMPLEMENT_SERIAL macro.
In the IMPLEMENT_SERIAL macro, the
CRuntimeClass call is added to a linked list of classes in the module state and then initialized, which breaks the linked list.
