WD2001: "Add" Button Unavailable In Spelling Checker (321481)

If you try to add a word to the dictionary when you use the spelling checker in Word 2001 for Mac, the Add button may be unavailable (dimmed). As a result, you cannot add new words to the custom dictionary.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, determine whether you have a custom dictionary installed on your computer. To do this, start the Sherlock (Find File) program, and then search for custom dictionary.
- If you find a custom dictionary, see the "There Is a Custom Dictionary Installed" section of this article.
- If you do not find a custom dictionary, see the "There Is No Custom Dictionary Installed" section of this article.
There Is a Custom Dictionary Installed
If there is a customer dictionary installed on your computer, note the location of the custom dictionary, and then follow these steps:
- Start Word, and then on the Edit menu, click Preferences.
- Click the Spelling & Grammar tab, and then click Dictionaries.
- Click Add, and then locate the custom dictionary that you found.
The custom dictionary is generally located in the following folder:Hard disk:System:Preferences:Microsoft
- Click OK two times.
There Is No Custom Dictionary Installed
If there is no custom dictionary installed on your computer, follow these steps:
- Quit Word, and then open the following folder on your computer's hard disk:
Hard disk:System Folder:Extensions
- Locate the following files, and then drag the files to the Trash:
Microsoft ole automation
Microsoft component library
Microsoft ole library
Microsoft structured storage
Microsoft internet library
- Open the following folder on your hard disk:
- Find the Microsoft folder, and then drag the Microsoft folder to the Trash.
- Restart Word.
