The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q321031

SYMPTOMS

When you turn on the Windows 2000 Startup and Recovery option, located in the System tool of Control Panel, the option automatically turns off each time you restart Windows.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by the Symantec pcAnywhere GINA (Graphical Identification and Authorization) filter, Awgina.dll.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you can either remove pcAnywhere from your computer, or turn off the pcAnywhere GINA filter. To do so, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Remove pcAnywhere

NOTE: If you want to continue to use pcAnywhere, follow the steps in "Method 2" of this article.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click pcAnywhere, and then click Add/Remove.

When the confirmation message appears, click Yes.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the removal process.

Method 2: Turn Off the pcAnywhere GINA Filter

NOTE: If you turn off the GINA filter, the following restrictions occur:
  • The CTRL+ALT+DEL function of the remote computer is turned off. To make a connection to the remote computer, you have to leave the user logged on to Windows at the host computer.
  • You cannot access the Windows Task Manager on the host computer from the remote computer, so you cannot unlock a locked Windows host.
  • The Optimize Desktop feature that makes any wallpaper or screen savers unavailable at the host, does not function.
  • Symmetric and Public-Key Encryption options are not available.
  • The host cannot use Windows NT User Manager to set up a caller list. Only the standard pcAnywhere connections are available.

To turn off the pcAnywhere GINA Filter, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  4. In the right pane, right-click GinaDLL, and then click Delete.

When the confirmation message appears, click Yes.
  5. Close the registry editor, and then restart your computer.
