Inst32.exe Causes an Error Message in Windows XP (319817)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install PrintMaster version 4.0, you may receive the following error message:
Inst32.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the data that the error report contains, the following error signature information may be listed:
   App name    App version  Module name  Module version  Offset
   --------------------------------------------------------------
   Inst32.exe  0.0.0.0      Ntdll.dll    5.1.2600.0      0000215c
				

CAUSE

This problem may occur if PrintMaster version 4.0 faults while it is trying to overwrite a system file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, please visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site, and then install all of the critical updates:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Type cd /d %windir%\system32, and then press ENTER.
  3. Type attrib -r mfcans32.dll, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
  5. Restart the PrintMaster 4.0 installation.
