An Access Violation Occurs in Lsass Because of a Stack Overflow (319709)

SYMPTOMS

When you are running complex Lightweight Data Access Protocol (LDAP) queries against Active Directory, a domain controller may stop responding (hang) with stack-overflow exception c00000fd. The entry in the Drwtsn32.log file starts like this:
Application exception occurred:
App: lsass.exe (pid=280)
When: 11.03.2002 @ 15:05:05.222
Exception number: c00000fd (stack overflow)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the query contains many terms with the OR operator. The terms specify an indexed attribute that is equal to a specific value. The problem may occur if there are more than 750 of these terms.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use fewer operands for the OR expression.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
